The Color Purple and a 7 Mile Stretch in Chanhassen?

Prince Gets His Own Section of Highway!


Prince fans are loving the latest addition honoring his legacy that he left to Minnesota and the world. There's now a highway named after Prince. The Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway sign was put into place on Thursday, August 3, 2023, in front of Prince's home and world-renowned studio, Paisley Park, in Chanhassen, Minnesota.


The seven-mile stretch of Highway 5 that runs past Paisley Park is now known as the Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway. The sign is purple, of course, a color that is known to be Prince's color.


MNDOT placed the sign with a small gathering of people. on Thursday, August 3, 2023. Among those, Prince's sister, Sharon L Nelson, and John Nelson, Prince's Nephew.


Sharon was escorted to the spot by the Highway for the sign placement by Mark Webster, who was the person was the first person to get the process moving to get the signs approved. Bob Finn, a neighbor of Prince's for twenty five years, came into the process early on and helped through the multiple year process to keep things on track. Sam Cooke came into the picture and helped to move it through the legislation process, keeping it moving until all saw it come to the day of the sign installations.


Both Sharon and John gave a few brief comments that day . John said it's always been Prince's Highway, now this makes it official. Lucy Rehm, Minnesota State Representative, encouraged everyone to put on their favorite Prince song and go for a drive as we remember Prince.


Connie from Musicapolis was invited to be present at the momentous occasion and assisted with the events for the public on Monday, August 7, 2023 at Lake Ann Regional Park and Crave Minneapolis.


Next time you're in Chanhassen, be sure to drive down the Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway, park at Lake Ann Regional Park, take s stroll down by Riley Creek and take a picture of the newly installed purple sign, be sure to get your Prince songs cued up for your drive.


Celebrations took place on Monday, August 7th, 2023 where others gathered together to share stories of their friendships and working relationships with Prince at Lake Ann Regional Park during the day. 150 people attended including Matt Fink, David TC Ellis, Damon Dickson, and Andre Fischer. There was a DJ who played Prince music, of course. Lawn games, a food truck . The park was secured and event organized by Sam Cooke, who was effective in moving along the legislation of the sign and Connie Ungrue was the co-host of this event.


In the evening, Crave Rootop, Downtown Minneapolis, was the location for more celebrating with DJs and a perfect summer evening for gathering, having great conversations with other people who love and admire Prince's contributions to the world of music, movies and culture.
